A Winter Journey Through Western Sichuan

    Jan-2026 Western Sichuan

This New Year trip through western Sichuan connected several very different landscapes in one route: the clear alpine lakes of Jiuzhaigou, the sharp mountain lines around Mount Siguniang, the long open views along Provincial Road 434, and the high pass at Zheduo Mountain before leaving. Winter made the whole trip feel colder and quieter, but also cleaner. The lakes, forests, snow peaks, and highland roads all had a bright, dry clarity that is hard to find in lower places.

Jiuzhaigou was the softer beginning of the journey. Even in winter, the water still carried its distinctive blue-green color, and the mountains around the valleys reflected clearly when the wind was calm. Mount Siguniang gave the trip a stronger alpine feeling, with peaks, ridges, and changing light making the road feel much more dramatic. Later, driving along Provincial Road 434 was one of the most memorable parts of the route: Yala Snow Mountain and Mount Gongga appeared across broad highland views, sometimes clear, sometimes half hidden by clouds. Before leaving, Zheduo Mountain gave the trip a final high-altitude moment, with sunset light, cold wind, and the feeling of standing at the edge of the plateau.

Looking back, this was a trip shaped more by movement than by a single destination. The best moments came from the transitions between valleys, lakes, snow mountains, and passes. Western Sichuan felt vast, direct, and powerful in winter, and the route left a strong impression of distance, altitude, and mountain light.
